One of the must frustrating parts about doing what I do (search engine marketing) in the last couple of months has been doing good quality SEO and yet not getting any results. At least not instantly!
So I started investigating. All the SEO gurus were crying that Google had implemented a 30 day delay on ranking sites for backlinks being built. I started to get really frustrated because it seemed like a lot more than 30 days. What did I do wrong that Google would punish my site?
Turns out, I was not the only one. I heard from dozens of SEO guys and gals who are actively doing SEO themselves (as in – they are in the trenches making it happen) and they too were experiencing more than a 30 day delay in seeing results from their efforts.
So I dug deeper. I started cross referencing my sites – what they ranked for, why they ranked for it, etc.
Here is what I found:
I found that a ton of my “forgotten” sites (sites I hadn’t touched in months – some even years) all of a sudden had a pretty decent ranking for some fairly competitive keywords. I was shocked. Upon further investigation I found that the reason for this was old backlinks from established sites.
In fact, in one case I found that the reason one of my sites was kicking ass in an extremely competitive niche was because of a .edu backlink I built to it 2 years ago. I was stunned!
Now, this does not mean it will take you years to rank, but simply put: It will take time!
Don’t buy into the “rank over night” BS. Yes it is still possible and I did it just this last week with an experiment blog I set up, but if you really want to win the SEO game – you gotta be willing to stick it out for a few months at least.
SEO is no longer a race – but is still a very worthwhile and extremely profitable endeavor. You got to know what you’re in for though – hence this short update!
I will be doing a lot more of these short training videos in the near future. If you like this kind of stuff, leave a comment and/or share this with your fans. Be sure to also subscribe to my newsletter and I will keep you in the loop when I release more cool stuff.
