Finding and Using Images for Your Ecover

14 Oct

When it comes to creating an ecover there are several steps in this process which take time to achieve. One of the first steps is finding a suitable image or photograph to use. After this you need to resize the image or select which portion of the image to actually use. Your next step is to put the image into your design so that it looks professional.

While all of this may sound a little overwhelming, it really doesn’t have to be. Just break down each step and spend some time getting things done. Before you know it your ecover will be well on its way to being designed and published.

Finding Photos

There are numerous places online where you can find suitable images for your book. If you own your own camera you should consider taking your own photographs if possible. This means that you own the image and you won’t have to worry about someone claiming that your image has been used inappropriately from their site or stock.

When searching online for photos and images look for places that offer royalty free images. This means that you have the rights to use the photo in any way you like. Other terms to look for are images that have a creative commons license to them and you can always search public domain sites for images.

Resizing Your Image

Many photographs are huge and must be resized so that you can use them easily. The easiest way to do this is to use a photo editing software such as Paint.net. This is a free software that has numerous options.

To resize your image you simply open your picture in the software and then go to the Image tab and click on resize. Easy and the process is done in seconds. You can use this tool to add text to your image and to cut out sections of the photograph.

For example your image may contain a picture of a dog or young girl which you want to use for your ecover design. Using paint you can select the portion of the image you want to use and then create a new image from it.

Always remember to save any work you do on your photo with a new name. This way if something goes wrong with your new image, you still have the original image to work with and can easily create a new version.

Designing Your Ecover

When it comes to the actual design of your ecover you have several options including using software such as Photoshop and Gimp. These do have a learning curve associated with them, but you can create stunning ecovers once you know what you are doing.

If you are in a rush and just want to get your ecover created then I recommend that you use an online ecover creator. This type of site allows you to use your own images and helps you design your ecover within minutes. Plus you can download both 2 and 3D versions of your new cover.

Using these basic steps and tools you should have no problems creating your own bestselling book with a fantastic looking ecover. Best of all our recommended resource is practically free to get started with!
