Researching Your Ecover Design

21 Aug

How much time and effort do you place on designing your new ecovers? Do you just slap up a cover and never think twice about it? Or do you take the time to look at other ecovers in your niche and see if a particular type of ecover attracts more attention than others?

Of course, the second option is the one you should be doing. Unfortunately many people don’t bother with this step. Instead they just put together something that they like and that’s it.

If you are serious about selling hundreds or thousands of copies of your book you need to take the time to design a great ecover. While you may have a great idea for your book cover, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it will be a cover that will sell.

One great place to look at is the Amazon Bookstore where you can see the bestselling Kindle and hard book covers. Look for books which are similar to yours and then see what makes them standout. Do they use a certain color or a particular type of font or font size?

Take notes of any book covers that you like. Don’t forget to search other book sites such as CreateSpace, Barnes & Noble and books listed on the ibookstore.

Once you have a list of notes you can use these to start designing your ecover. Your next is to determine how you will actually design your ecover. You have several choices including:

  • Pay a designer to create one for you
  • Buy Photoshop, learn how to do it, and then create your new cover
  • Use cheaper sites like Fiverr which is often a hit and miss way
  • Use an online ecover site creator

My favorite option is to use an online ecover site where I can create lots of ecovers for one low price each and every month. The nice thing about having the ability to create more than one ecover is that you could theoretically test out several styles of covers.

Most experienced marketers will tell you how important it is to track your results and ecovers are no exception. Knowing what type of cover makes people want to buy is valuable information.

After publishing your book your sales may decline and if this happens you could easily change your ecover to see if that brings in more sales. Simple changes such as changing the background color, increasing the font size or style could increase your conversions quickly.

Even if you just publish lots of small reports each month using an online ecover maker website will help you keep your business costs down. You can make an unlimited number of ecovers and download them as 2D or 3D ecovers.

So go ahead and do your research on the best selling ebooks in your niche and then get ready to design your very own ecover yourself.
